Man Australia has some really fucking dumb judges

Keeping with the common political theme of moral panic, it seems some utterly idiotic Australian judge has decided to substantially increase the definition for reasons that appear to purely be ‘the lulz’.

From the Smersh:

A Supreme Court judge has ruled that an internet cartoon, in which child characters resembling those from The Simpsons engage in sexual acts, is child porn. The main issue of the case was whether a fictional cartoon character could “depict” a “person” under law.

I’ll just stop here, that’s right. A fictional cartoon character now apparently depicts ‘a person’ under law. Ostensibly then you could commit egregious acts of slander/libel against others by creating cartoons of them in compromising situations. This is just… beyond the pale. Continuing:

But Justice Adams agreed with the magistrate. He found that, while The Simpsons characters had hands with four fingers and their faces were “markedly and deliberately different to those of any possible human being”, the mere fact that they were not realistic representations of human beings did not mean that they could not be considered people.

Ponder that for a second. That’s right. The mere fact that they’re FICTIONAL FUCKING CHARACTERS, you know, COMPLETE AND UTTER FABRICATED CREATIONS, doesn’t detract from the fact that something sinister has gone on here, or some equally as specious reasoning to make this shit illegal. Oh but don’t worry, the Judge lets fire on just how specious the reasoning was:

Justice Adams said the purpose of the legislation was to stop sexual exploitation and child abuse where images of “real” children are depicted.

However it was also to deter the production of other material, including cartoons, that could “fuel demand for material that does involve the abuse of children”.

That’s right. Captain judge mc idiot over here has decided arbitrarily that the depiction of something rather twisted but nonetheless FICTITIOUS fuels contact offenses and the demand for child porn.

Yep, that’s right. Some idiot fucking around with his wacom is now as high up on the cops hitlist as Geoff Leonard or Dennis Ferguson.

So if you get drunk one night, or even sober, fuck around with photoshop or the like, and a cop or some other moral authoritarian sees, you could be spending the next ten years in long bay because some idiot judge who doesn’t understand the difference between reality and fiction is scared about ‘teh chillun’.

Because obviously if you stumble upon some messed up cartoons you’re a contact offender and need to be put in gaol. What the fuck is going on with this country.
