So You Wanna be a Cop?
My experiences with police recently, and from what I gather from some of the stories I keep hearing the bulk of young people's experiences also, have been fucked up. Worse than ever before. They are interfering in harmless social interaction CONSTANTLY, and their attitudes are increasingly disrespectful and condescending. This worsening problem has drawn my attention to an interesting and revealing question.
Exactly what kind of person aspires to be a police officer? Surely many are motivated in pursuing this career path by an interest in interfering in the affairs of other adults. It would certainly help to enjoy ordering others around. A badge is also a good way of commanding authority if you are otherwise unable to do this based on strength of character and intelligence alone. If you think society is deteriorating because of a lack of respect for law, order and tradition, a career in the force is a great way to act out on this belief.
Observing the typical tasks most commonly performed by the police leads to the logical conclusion that the individuals most likely to want to be police officers are those with a common set of particular interests and personality traits. Broadly speaking, these are not honourable or respectable qualities when displayed in human interaction. Those with the greatest desire to become cops must be either very misinformed about the role of the police in practice, or as is more frequently the case, fucked up control freaks with limited intelligence and a lack of marketable skills. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest these people SHOULDN'T BE GIVEN GUNS AND EXPECTED TO EFFECTIVELY MAINTAIN ADEQUATE SOCIETAL FUNCTIONING.
This is why if you value your autonomy and independence as an individual, the default position you take should be to question every action performed by police officers, and view them as universally dangerous. There is no good reason cops deserve your respect without first proving themselves deserving of it, and therefore a rare exception. EVEN THEN, their job is to enforce unjust laws. They are the footsoldiers of a state operating on the perception that the public are essentially children, incapable of civil social conduct and making informed decisions without broad controls first being in place on their behaviour. The best course of action is to ignore the instruction of cops wherever possible. Only reveal details and comply with orders when you are in no uncertain terms required to by law. Takings things further comes down to making decisions with your self interest in mind. If you are threatened with unjust force, I see nothing wrong with responding in kind. There is no shame in doing whatever you must to escape the potentially hazardous consequences of their actions.
The police force has the upper hand in a war when they take away our arms and our means to fight. What a fucking hollow victory.
