DETAILS have emerged of how two well-dressed thieves clinically pulled off a record £40 million ($79.4 million) armed robbery of a high end London jewellery store.
British police overnight released CCTV images of two men in expensive suits entering Graff Jewellers in the posh Mayfair district last Thursday, where they pulled off the stunning heist in just two minutes.
The men pulled up outside the store in a black London taxi and convinced the security guard to let them past the armoured front door.
Inside the men pulled guns and snatched 43 luxury display items including rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches.
They grabbed a terrified female staff member as hostage and fired a shot as they left the premises.
The staff member was left outside the shop and no one was injured.
Detectives said the robbers made their getaway in a blue BMW, which they abandoned a few streets away when a second shot was fired into the ground.
The men then switched to a silver Mercedes and, in another swap shortly afterwards, several suspects including, police believe at least two getaway drivers, got into a black car in a nearby road.
"This was a well planned robbery with a number of vehicles used to help the robbers escape," said Detective Chief Inspector Pam Mace.
"These men are extremely dangerous and fired at least two shots in busy London streets as they made their getaway."
The items snatched were the cream of the store's inventory.
"They knew exactly what they were looking for and we suspect they already have a market for the jewels," an officer told the UK newspaper The Daily Mail.
The raid was thought to be Britain's biggest jewel robbery.
